A military procession of horses passes by on a clear winter morning from an old keep of Edo castle. With the Meiji restoration, power was transferred back to the emperor from the shogunate, the military rulers of Japan. In his landscape prints, Kiyochika observes the changes in Japan that occurred during the Meiji regime: the rapid Westernisation and industrialisation, are all subjects of his works.
