Nobukazu Yōsai was widely considered to be the best student of Chikanobu Yoshu, an artist famed for his prints of beauties. Nobukazu followed in his master's footsteps, but also created many prints for wartime propaganda and that showed a modernising Tokyo.

This print presents beauties on the beach off of the island of Enoshima, close to Tokyo. His use of profound use of gradation helps to give depth to both the sea and sky. Thought the beauties themselves are in traditional Japanese dress, men in the background can be seen wearing the more western attire that was gaining popularity in the Meiji era.
