In the series 'Pictures of Ladies' Etiquette', Chikanobu presents court ladies in a wide range of situations and activities, from writing poetry, watching the cherry blossoms, to preparing for events such as Girls' Day in this print. Detailed patterned kimonos are a prominent feature of many of the prints.


Hina Matsuri (Girls' Day) is celebrated on 3rd of March of each year. Families with daughters display ornamental dolls (hina-ningyo) representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.
