The wind swept grasses on the fields of Chiryu. Washed in blue, the horizon where sky and land meet are almost blended. Signalling this choice in colour is the word 'aoi', used interchangeably to refer to both green and blue in the Japanese language. In the centre of the design stands a large solitary pine, sheltering a congregation of people, travellers on the Tōkaidō or visitors to the famous horse fair at the thirty-ninth station along the route from Edo to Kyoto.
