An upper body portrait of a young lady standing before flowering plum blossoms. Contrasting with the detailed finish of the trunk, the twisted branches of the plum tree draw from the cursiveness of Japanese ink painting. With her eyes fixedly locked before her, along with the uprightness of her posture and her arm's forward movement, the model's pose reveals a sense of confidence. The dominant warmth of the red pigment punctuating the design ties into this. Throughout the tradition of ukiyo-e, or art of the floating world, red is often associated with the erotic. The rich red hue of her lips, echoed by the the deep scarlet strip of her outer robe and plum blossoms, all suggest the model's inherent passion and seductiveness.
