A warrior and a poet, Kanesuke was selected to command the famous retainers collectively known as the Forty Seven Rōnin. With a loyal and dedicated troop behind him, the formidable veteran points his battle fan as if signalling a charge towards the rear gate of the Moronao mansion in which he was positioned on the night of their attack. The last instalment of Kuniyoshi's Faithful Samurai series, a note from the publisher poignantly finishes the accompanying text towards the bottom left corner, thanking the audiences' praise and hoping for the creation of a sequel, shedding light on Edo period (1603-1868) publishing culture and audience relationship in the world of ukiyo-e woodblock printing.
