Kuniyoshi Utagawa, The Great Battle of Kurikara, War Scene
Original Japanese woodblock print.
Artist: Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1798-1861)
Title: The Great Battle of Kurikara
Publisher: Tatsuya Kichizo
Size: 36.6 x 76.6 cm
This print shows the battle between the Minamoto and Taira families in Kurikara. Two generals on horseback are leading their troops into battle. The clashes between these two families really happened throughout history, but the accounts have since been greatly modified and exaggerated to suit kabuki plays and ukiyo-e. In the battle of Kurikara, the Minamoto clan got the upper hand over their opponents by employing clever strategies and tricking the Taira into thinking that their enemies are more numerous than they actually were.
