With fine blue skies reflected in the moat, the Kikyo-mon gate stands brilliantly in its calm surroundings. An entrance to the imperial palace in Tokyo, Kikyo-mon is one of the original gates to what had prior been Edo Castle and lies on the outskirts on the southern side of the palace. The name of the gate refers to the kikyo flower, also known as the Chinese bellflower or balloon flower. The regal purple flower is celebrated in Japan as one the seven flowers of autumn. Today, the roof of the gate is still ornamented with the crest of the kikyo flower.
