Title: Kasumi Satsuma Bowl
Date: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Dimensions: (W) 15.5 (D) 15.5 (H) 7 cm
A satsuma ware bowl with kasumi band and Chinese scene.
All held within a band of kasumi, a motif of stylised clouds that indicate an air of classicism, is an intricate network of patterns which gently flow into one another in the absence of a definitive line border. Seigaha waves alternate with abstract floral patterns, geometric shapes and gilded clusters. Framed by the thick gold band by the rim and simpler arrangement of shapes by the foot, the multitude of patterns finds balance with punctuations of white enamel throughout. A scene of a past China can be found within, showing a young book peddler with three elderly men, one of which reveals from a scroll the Chinese characters for ‘mountain grove’.
