Mt. Nokogiri has been designated as a place of worship for over one 1,300 years. The Soto Zen Buddhist temple of Nihon-ji resides there and about halfway up the mountain ascent is a large statue of the Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing and medicine, which was carved around 1780. In this print, the mountain itself resembles the Buddha’s silhouette. Subtly rendered on the mountain face are some of the 1,500 statues of Buddhist disciples said to have achieved enlightenment whilst remaining on earth. The mountain jutting out behind it, resembles it’s designated name, Eagle Cliff.
