Title: A Courtesan Holding A Mouse
Series: Seiro Bijin Nanatsume Awase
Publisher: Moriya Jihei
Date: 1791-1804

This print shows a young courtesan wearing an open kimono and holding a mouse. The image allows for a variety of interpretations, however the series title suggests that the image should be viewed as a lighthearted portrayal of youth. The mouse can also be associated with abundance and the god of wealth and prosperity, Daikokuya. The young woman’s open kimono gives the viewer a glimpse of her chest and gives the otherwise playful imagery an erotic touch.
