Description

Artist: Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-1892)
Title: 9. Looking amused – the appearance of a high-ranking maid in the Bunsei era
Series: Thirty-Two Aspects of Customs and Manners
Publisher: Tsujiokaya Kamekichi
Date: 1888

The series “Thirty-Two Aspects of Customs and Manners” consists of portrayals of women from different social classes over a span of one hundred years. The lady depicted here is an okujochu, a maid of a feudal lord’s concubine. She is looking over a veranda at something that causes her amusement. Her shaved eyebrows and blackened teeth indicate that she is already married. She wears green lipstick on her bottom lip, a fashion of the time, showing that she is a wealthy young woman. Her hairstyle, elegant and unadorned, is done in a manner that resembles a ginkgo leaf. A small purse with chains is seen coming out of her sleeve. Different patterns adorn her kimono and her collar is embossed.
