Kitano Tsunetomi was an extremely successful poster artist. He also pursued a career in painting and became an influential figure in Osaka and Kyoto artistic circles. Most of Tsunetomi's prints are based on his paintings.

Chikamatsu Manzaemon was a Japanese dramatist whose plays are still highly regarded as some of the best in the Japanese repertoire. This print shows the courtesan Umekawa from the play 'Meido no Hiyaku'. The beauty is in love with Chubei, who works for a firm of couriers. After Chubei steals money to release Umekawa from her contract, the pair flees to Chubei's home village, deciding to commit lover's suicide together rather than be parted.
