This print shows the portrait of a wife of a samurai in the Omi district who was involved in the rebellion at the end of the shogunate era. With the Meiji restoration, the samurai class was abolished and those who previously served the shogun were stripped off their titles. With the husband passing away during the rebellion, the woman clutches a dagger with the plan to take her own life. The gesture is an echo to the old days of the samurai and contrasts with the dawn of a new enlightened era.
